New remix from the Aversas and friends!
Apr 1, 2010

I want to share my most recent musical project with you!  Andy ("zircon") and I consider this our best video game arrangement to date.  It was a challenge to achieve the perfect balance between the game's source material and our own original material, but we think the end result was a success.

Thank you so much to injury (Michelle Zuzow), Harmony (Brandon Bush), and big giant circles (Jimmy Hinson) for contributing your fantastic vocals to the piece!  You have done us proud.  And now, without further ado, we give you...

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 'Macarena of Time'

Enjoy! If you would like to follow along, here are the lyrics:

ZELDA:
My lullaby is fly, but they say that I'm a dreamuh
Ruling over Hyrule with the wisdom of Athena
I'm the Princess, and I'm well-dressed
Those peasant girls? Let's just say it's no contest!
He'll seize me, and squeeze me
All through the night when he appears and frees me

LINK:
Got a master sword, and it's smaller than my wienuh
But I like to spend my days swingin' it through the arena
And cuttin' all the grass, spinning like a ballerina
HEY, Ocarina!

Keeping my physique, drinkin' potion makes me leanuh
And I got a pretty horse named Epona - have you seen 'uh?
Harassed too many chickens, and they issued a subpoena
HEY, Ocarina!

SARIA:
Saria's my name - Zelda laughs like a hyena
You know that I'm the one who gave Link his Ocarina
And when he blows it, the b*tch knows it
Be no denying when he comes and shows it
He'll seize me, and squeeze me
All through the night when he appears and frees me

LINK:
Going to the future - the undead are getting meanuh
And Ganon's such a brute - (I disapprove of his demeanuh)
I guess it's really bogus that the grass is always greenuh
HEY, Ocarina!

Chasing all those fairies, now I think I broke my femuh
Doc said I'll be fine, but he says that I'm a screamuh
My tunic's getting dirty, gotta take it to the cleanah
HEY, Ocarina!

Keeping my physique, drinkin potion makes me leanuh
Got a pretty horse named Epona, have you seen 'uh?
Harassed too many chickens, and they issued a subpoena
HEY, Ocarina!

Game Developer's Conference 2010
Mar 22, 2010

It's been just over a week since Andy and I got back from the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco... and what a fantastic time it was!  Though I managed to get sick on the way back, it was wonderful getting to meet everybody from student programmers and hobbyist musicians to award-winning game and film composers.  I'm definitely going to go back next year, and maybe even to the GDC Online event in Austin this October.  In the meantime, I hope to stay in touch with everyone I met!

If you'd like to check out the vocal demo reels I was giving out at GDC, which feature some tracks that aren't otherwise available on my site, just visit the links below:

  • Demo: Orchestral Singing
  • Demo: Contemporary Genres

Oh yeah, and if anyone is going to PAX East in Boston this weekend (March 26-28), don't forget to visit the OverClocked ReMix panel on Sunday at 11:30.  I'll be one of the panelists!

Projects for 2010
Jan 17, 2010

Happy New Year, everyone!  I hope you had a rejuvenating holiday season.  It was my first as a married woman, and while busier with travel and gift-giving, I found great comfort and joy in all the time spent with my new, expanded family.

Looking back, 2009 was quite a year.  The preparation for the wedding, and subsequent transition into wedded life, has been so life-changing.  In some ways, that forced my musical projects to take the back seat for a while... But it's time to kick back into gear!

I have a couple of big projects on the horizon for 2010, so I thought I would clue you in:

  • I will be working with Impact Soundworks, the sample developer my husband co-founded, to record our very own vocal library: Siren!  Featuring both solo singing and pop stacks; vibrato, straight tone, and breathy timbres; multiple vowels, consonants, and key phrases; Siren will be a Kontakt format sample library using multisamples (not loops).  Pretty soon, composers will have my voice at their fingertips for all kinds of projects... I just hope it doesn't put me out of work!  ;)  We're shooting for a Spring release.
  • My next solo album - yessss!  I have kept this under wraps for a while because the concept was still in development, but I have happily (and enthusiastically) settled now.  What is the big inspiration, you ask?  Atlantis.  An ancient civilization lost under the sea in a single day... it is a legend that has captivated so many cultures for centuries, and I can't wait to explore it.  If you wish to receive updates and mp3 previews on the album's progress, please subscribe to my newsletter!  (The sign-up box is in the left column of the page.)  I am really psyched about this project, and hope to have it finished this coming Winter, if all goes well.

Wish me luck.  :)

Vocals on Christopher Tin's "Calling All Dawns"
Nov 4, 2009

I'm sure I have mentioned the music of Christopher Tin before, but now I'm more excited than ever: his highly anticipated debut album, Calling All Dawns, has been released!  Performed by the Royal Symphony Orchestra and an impressive lineup of world renowned vocalists, the CD of ethnic-orchestral choral works collectively forms a breathtaking song cycle.  I do not exaggerate when I say that this is the BEST album I have added to my collection in years.

Chris quickly rose to fame with the main theme he composed for the popular video game Civilization IV, "Baba Yetu."  (Of course, an updated version with the Soweto Gospel Choir is the very first track on Calling All Dawns!)  Like many, that is how I first discovered his music, and I have been a fan ever since.

So what is my personal connection here?  Over the last couple of years, I worked with Chris to record the demo vocals for many of the songs on his album, and provided a good deal of background vocals for the final product.  It may not sound as glamorous as actually being one of those international stars... but when Frederica von Stade heard my demo recording for her solo performance on "Hymn do Trójcy Świętej" and commented, "I'm not sure I can do much better," I nearly died of happiness.  :)

zircon & I collaborate for the official FL Studio 9 demo song
Oct 1, 2009

Version 9 of the music-making software FL Studio was just recently released, and it features a new official demo song... composed and programmed by my husband, zircon, with lyrics, vocal writing, and vocal performance by me!  FL Studio (also known as Fruity Loops) has been Andrew's primary music program since 2004, so he was honored and thrilled when they asked him to write the demo.  If you don't have the program yourself, you can still hear it on YouTube.  Check it out!

Additionally, I wanted to let you know that I have finally added...

  • a comments feature to my news posts, so feel free to leave me a message! :)
  • an RSS feed, so that you can follow my news updates without having to remember to visit the site.  Just add the feed to your Google homepage or reader!

Origins wins 2nd place for Best New Age Album in JPF Awards!
Sep 2, 2009

The 2008-2009 Just Plain Folks Music Awards (the largest independent music awards in the world) were just recently held on August 31st, and results are in!  This year there were over half a million song entries and tens of thousands of albums submitted... it's almost unfathomable.

Last time the JPF awards were held was in 2006 (the year my husband won "Best Techno Album" and "Best Techno Song"), so this was my first chance to submit my own material.  I sent in both of my albums, Origins and Through Sand and Snow!  The results:

  • Origins won 2nd place for "Best New Age Album"!
  • "Deliverance of the Heart" from Origins won 5th place for "Best New Age Song"
  • "Walking In the Air" from Through Sand and Snow was one of 24 finalists in Cover Songs
  • "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" from Through Sand and Snow was one of 23 finalists in Trad. Holiday Songs

And Andrew did excellently as well, winning "Best Techno Song" and 2nd place for "Best Techno Album" for his release Antigravity, as well as 5th place in "Best Ambient Song" and 6th in "Best Electronica Song."  Phew!

We are thrilled to have placed so well, and PROPS to Brian Austin Whitney and the whole community of JPF for pulling off yet another successful awards ceremony.  Next time, maybe we'll be able to make it there in person!

We're married!
Aug 8, 2009

It's official: Andrew "zircon" Aversa and I have tied the knot!  After three years as a couple, I am finally privileged to call him my husband.  If you don't know this guy by now, get to stepping!  He is a composer/producer, electronica artist, adjunct professor of the Drexel University Music Industry program, mentor, frequent collaborator of mine... and one of the most honorable and giving persons I have ever known.

Our wedding was held on July 26th at the Stroudsmoor Country Inn, in the Poconos of Pennsylvania!  There was a "good-luck" downpour about 30 minutes before our (outdoor) forested ceremony, and the rest of the day was spectacular.  We were joined by our families & friends - many of them fellow artists at OverClocked ReMix - and had a wonderful reception with music provided by our guests!  Andrew and I chose "Deliverance of the Heart" from Origins as our first dance, in fact.  :)

Now that we're back from our honeymoon in Vancouver, I can get started on the name change.  From this point on, Jillian Goldin is now Jillian Aversa!  Please make note if you'd like to assist me through this transition.  JillianGoldin.com will redirect to JillianAversa.com, but if you see reference to my old name or website anywhere, feel free to let me know.  It will be a tedious process, but well worth it.  :D
